You Are Not An Abomination!

Updated: May 4, 2020

The word "Abomination" appears in the bible 76 times in 69 verses. Most of the time it's describing an act, not a person. Even when it is referring to a person, it doesn't specifically name sexual orientation. However, that is what many Christians refer to when they use the term.

We all are sinful creatures and have sinned. Our sins are an abomination towards God. The Bible specifically calls people who practice witchcraft, people who are unfair to others, people who withhold goods, devising evil and fighting with others without a cause. Proverbs 17:14 says, "he who justifies the wicked and condemns that just is an abomination." We can go round and round about who the wicked are. (At the end of this blog, I will include a link to all the verses that speak of abomination so you can look it up for yourself.)

As I stated in the beginning most of the verses talk about acts, not people. Proverbs 6:16-19 says there are 7 things God hates and he calls the last one an abomination. A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that creates wicked plans, feet that run swiftly to evil, a false witness, and one who spreads rumors.

Every time I look at this list, I'm amazed because other than shedding innocent blood, we have all been guilty of at least one of these. But God is merciful and forgiving. We only have to ask for forgiveness and the strength to do better next time. It's amazing what God can do with that simple, but honest plea. Becoming a better person takes time and more than likely we will mess up more times than we can count. God is not looking for us to be perfect, He's looking for us to honestly come to Him and put all our cares, concerns, strongholds, shortcomings, imperfections, etc on Him.

He will pick up the slack. All we can do is be better than the person we were yesterday and ask God for guidance while seeking His truth.

We are all a work in progress, sinners saved by grace. Not an abomination, never an abomination when we are earnestly seeking Him. He is able to transform you from the inside out, but you have to let Him in. In the sight of God, you are fearfully and wonderfully made. God loves you. Ask Him to guide you, help you, change you, forgive you and he absolutely will.

The best way to find truth is to search the scriptures for yourself and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand. Don't just get by on commentaries.

We need to bear in mind God hates the sin and not the sinner. Christ died for the sinner, the sinner has to repent from the sin. The seven "Abominations" the author mentioned above are all sins, not sinners.

No one has any right to write off any individual as being beyond the saving grace of God. Christ died for us while we were yet sinners, it is this unconditional love that makes us want to turn from our sins to be like Christ.

So how do I overcome my sins, any sin?

Philippians 4:13 New King James Version (NKJV)

13 I can do all things through [a]Christ who strengthens me.

That's it, Christ gives us the power we need to…
